qualchan ~ dead solid perfect (a screwed tangerine dream mix).

hey, it's been a while. hurt my arm at work so i've been outta commission for a while now. anyway, to relieve some of the boredom, i made this screwed mix of tangerine dream's dead solid perfect, one of their lesser known gems. i found that when i was screwing it took on more of an october feel, more in line with umberto/carpenter/simonetti/as much as i hate to say it, a stranger things kinda vibe. anyway, i hope y'all enjoy & are having a great weekend!

ps will try to be a lil bit more active over here, but we'll see.

pps artwork by main man, alex.

qualchan ~ ninety nine flowers is out on cassette!

my latest tape just came out today via magical garage taste, who is absolutely one of the nicest & hardworkin fellers out there. this album deals with the loss of freedom, & is inspired by nagamatzu, sauce twinz, bobby turman & sandwell district. the title comes from roberto bolano talking about pushing forward as a new vanguard of culture. it's dark but is maybe my most accessible work yet. anyway, it also comes with a cd-r of the latest smoke signals mix

you can purchase the tape or download for nyp here

qualchan ~ ninety nine flowers

ps tape is sold out, but is getting a repress through illuminated paths early next month! :)

one of them days.

don't even know where to start with this... classical ambient noise jazz? don't let my reptilian lack of motor skills prevent you from getting this. wonderful album.

california uber alles.

i have posted about this lady before here, & it's more of the mesmerizing & enchanting jams here.

ps not to get overly political, but while listening to dead kennedys i thought it was funny that a song that was written almost forty years ago is still fucking applicable in my home state. also, kinda pumped about trump being in office soon. all of the best punk records were made under reagan, & we all know what a fucking scumbag that prick was. here is to the downfall of america. see ya at the mixer.

drip from my walk.

beautiful drones from fluxus extraordinaire yoshi wada recorded back in 84. transports you to the headiest of clouds.

a thousand words.

a canadian weirdbeard lady from the early nineties. pretty uneven album, but there are some really rewarding moments on here. i'm not a fan of the whole "if i make weird sounds & then yell & then hit a snare once, then this is experimental" side of musique, but there are some really nice songs where she just focuses on jazz which reminds me a lil bit of deerhoof if greg saunier was allowed to let it all out. kinda wish she had stayed with that.

ps sad news about tomita.

pps i am now reviewing tapes for cassette gods, so if you want yr stuff up there, get at me.

two new qualchan tapes just came out today!

hey there! i just had two tapes come out today. the first a split with my good friend al, deep ambient dreaming on that one. the second is a chopped&screwed hip hop tape compiling some of my favorites off of my old mixtapes i put out years ago, plus a few new ones. hope y'all are enjoying spring!

Monday, March 21, 2016

day at the seaside.

another gem for y'all. a stunning czech folk gem from 1989, her guitar playing is amazing, & her voice is so powerful & haunting. you may recognize her from the very first mix i ever posted here, so here is the full length. enjoy!

Thursday, March 17, 2016

twenty nine palms.

aw fam, i'm high as fuck & this is bizarre as fuck so it's a match made in paradise. danielle palardy roger is a weirdbeard from 80's canaduh, & she is a percussionist/composer/improvisor of the highest order. a blender full of all of my favorite things. just needs to be heard to be understood.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

know i'm not the one.

fucking far out man. at times reminds me of riley/reich/all the names that make our hearts aflutter.

ps i have two tapes coming out in a month or two, so keep yr eyes peeled!

Friday, March 4, 2016

islands.

just look at that cover. i'm kinda high right now, & this sounds amazing. imma leave the floor open for my japanese counterpart to throw in his two cents on gagaku. for the spelunkers, see ya on the descent.

Thursday, March 3, 2016

we will always be young.

how do i even describe this... if delia derbyshire & elaine radigue decided to make a post classical album with elements of jazz... that doesn't even come close to the majesty of this weird gem. cannot recommend this enough!

ps didn't even recognize, but it's been four years already! how time flies eh?

Monday, February 29, 2016

another monday.

really pleasant french folk record from the late seventies. gets a little too middle earth for me at moments, but still nice. not my rip, so all thanks to the islands.

ps have been wanting to post about this for a minute now, but seriously fuck michael gira. my heart goes out to larkin grimm & for all survivors.

freedom club. ~ smoke signals vol II.

time for another leap into my remixes of murky prog & screwed funk. not as deep as my young persons series, this is meant to be listened to while yr on the dancefloor & yr head is swimming in the clouds.

ps coming up on four years & five hundred posts. forever forward.

Thursday, February 4, 2016

i felt a pull between us like gravity.

back to my ultimate love, gamelan music. there is a light heartedness, maybe even i dare say a naive childlike sense of wonder about the music. absolutely delightful to listen to. i have two more ujang suryana albums i will be sharing in the near future, don't miss out on these treats.

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

bless up lion.

sailing through a haze with this as my northstar. i hear blues deep down in the dna of these sublime veena jams.

dancing horses.

two turkish masters creating visions of utterly devastating loveliness. perfect for rainy day smoke sessions.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

music of the air.

i am wading through the heady waters of a cough syrup induced haze being soundtracked by the post nagasaki minimalism of this beaut. this will play throughout cruz's america as we are all being rounded up for the internment camps. see y'all real soon.

well then.

four song ep of evocative santoor & vocal jams by this mesmerizing greek songbird.

Thursday, January 28, 2016

qualchan ~ zazen c41 now available!!!

i started making these new age tape loops back when gregg was sick, & finished it last summer after the end of a seven year relationship. very personal release, & i can't thank alex & scott enough for wanting to put it out. indebted to bill basinski & bobby turman. intended for meditation.

purchase my tape.

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

nine sides of air.

as i promised, more winsome & alluring ragas. been listening to the second piece a lot lately while lying on my couch & trying to recuperate.

Tuesday, January 26, 2016

memory of a big room.

still sick, so i'm being soothed by these strange, beguiling & enchanting sounds from mongolia. at points reminds me of windham hill, but not nearly as cheesy. can't recommend this one enough.

Monday, January 25, 2016

when you had the chance.

since i feel like shit, i'll keep with the theme of albums using flu as part of the name. here is this brilliantly beautiful album made by dude solo with a double bass in 76.

steppin' into tomorrow.

feeling like death, so thought i'd post this feverdream avant garde vocal album from 1983. her range is sikh, & the songs sound like derbyshire's deepest nightmares. or maybe just mine...

Saturday, January 23, 2016

the shining path.

carnatique beauty of the highest order. plenny more ragas coming yr way.

ps be on the lookout for revamp of the site, along with the latest smokesignals mix coming soon.

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

be brave.

a fantastic collection of us army dudes playing slick funk while overseas from the seventies.

part one    ///    part two

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

the hill of dreams.

fucking great early electro album, but the real highlight is i cry (night after night). if yr into ppu, cosmic chronic, omega supreme, etc al then this is for you.

Sunday, January 17, 2016

do the astral plane.

holy shit, this is fucking weird & wondrous. hans reichel created his own custom guitars & the daxophone, which is nuts to watch. the sounds he gets are otherworldly & beautiful. definitely for the spelunkers out there. get lost friends.

part one     //    part two

highly recommend grabbing both parts, this one is a real delight.

Saturday, January 16, 2016

we can only speak to the future.

weird sparse psyche giallo shit from the masters sorgini & my main fucking man alessandroni. unreleased library cues from the seventies. on point.

bowie is dead, & i'm glad for it.

he was nothing more than a pedophile & a thief. david bowie was the pat boone of the art world. good riddance asshole.

ps i'm sure this will bum people out, but fuck you. absolutely no way to build a case for a rapist. don't like it, there are a million other blogs. go find a new one.

Tuesday, January 5, 2016

we said we wouldn't look back.

to start 2016 off on the right foot, i encourage you to dive deep into this enchanting japanese chanteuse. the female scott walker. reminds me a bit of dagmar... anyway, hope y'all are surviving out there.
