 I'll c-c-combo break the homages jefe have been handling to everyone here to grant his well-deserved own.

Hermeto "the Sorcerer" Pascoal is as awesome and old as dinossaurs. He recorded / participated in dozen of releases, between solos, collaborations and one-time projects, such as the ones above. Quarteto Novo was formed as a touring band for a popular singer, Geraldo Vandré. When the tour was finishied, they decided to record an album together -- which I previously shared in the lodge. As the drummer was an acquaintance of Hermeto, he invited him to join the sessions, and almost didn't make in because of his "awkward looks" -- Hermeto has albinism -- according to some manager. Fortunately, he eventually joined in only to record one of the most quintessential Brazilian instrumental albums.

A couple of years later, he would also be invited to join Brazilian Octopus, a supergroup assembled to perform the soundtrack for an ambitious institutional event. Yet another quintessential record, although with a whole different concept. It's hard indeed to believe these two records are only two years apart from each other. I bet my socks you're really gonna dig this one, buddy (email arriving soon).

This is one of those albums that encapsulates the very raison d'etre of a reissue label like Finders Keepers, or Trunk for that matter. John Hill's Six Moons Of Jupiter is a dizzying cocktail of avant-garde jazz, cosmic psychedelia and electronic experimentation, intermittently augmented by the poetry of Susan Christie who recites text over parts of certain tracks. There are drum-fuelled beat tracks like 'Io' or the David Axelod-like 'Amalthea', and then there's some woozy, electroacoustic soundscaping on the hazy, effects-laden 'Ganymede', all of which are ideal fodder for library hounds, but 'Callisto' and 'Elara' mark the real creative peaks here, eschewing the kind of exotica-appeal that tends to taint reissues with a hint of kitsch. The latter of these compositions draws a certain amount of influence from Messaien's Turangalila Symphonie in its ambitious, often erratic harmonies and its mingling of conventional and electronic instrumentation. The album is capped off with an alternate, instrumental rendition of 'Europa', which it has to be said, benefits from the absence of Christie's reading - which itself is isolated as a final piece on the album, 'I Am The Storm Of Dawn'. This amazing concept album will undoubtedly appeal greatly to anyone who fell under the spell of Jean-Claude Vannier's L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches and generally to followers of weird and wondeful musics from the archicives. Soul turned Spanish pop into the fuel that ignited the dance floors and parties of Spain in the second half of the 60s. For most bands, the soul explosion meant facing the “renovate or die” dilemma. After years of trying to emulate The Shadows and later The Beatles, the groups had two alternatives: joining the psychedelic movement or adapting the soul genre to the Spanish taste.

Those who wanted to follow the rock path had to bear in mind the advances in the recording techniques that led to Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, something that was virtually impossible for most Spanish bands. Besides, the record companies, radio stations and especially the public were not ready to “open their minds” to the psychedelic revolution.

Soul, however, did enjoy a bigger success thanks to the hits by the Tamla Motown and Atlantic artists, and thus many guitar groups decided to incorporate a horn section. Spanish soul became hugely popular, and during the second half of the 60s was the dominant music genre in a country still under Franco’s dictatorship.

Apart from artists that imitated the purest sounds from the US, others took risks and tried subgenres such as progressive R&B, freakbeat soul, sunshine soul or psych-pop with soulish influences. Mariza Koch was born in Athens in 1944 but lived in her mother's hometown in Santorini from a young age.^[2] Her father was a German
In an off-beat but original way Mariza Koch began her musical career in 1971 with an album titled "Arabas". It consisted of a collection of traditional Greek folk songs blended with unusual beats from traditional and modern electronic instrumental sounds. One could even term the sound as folk rock. On the other hand Mariza's unique vocals became the center piece of the music which on more than one occasion needed no accompaniment. No matter what one called it, the album was a resounding success. More albums followed with the sound eventually mellowing back into the original folk sounds of the past, where traditional instruments are used in there entirety. Koch's most recent album included elements of traditional Greek music and Jazz Fusion. On 14 March 2010, Alpha TV ranked Koch the 29th top-certified female artist in the nation's phonographic era (since 1960) - some fucked translation of her greek wikipedia page.

mαρίζα kωχ is a greek psyche folk rock sweetheart & this album hails from 71'. her voice took a song or two to resonate with these ol' ears, but when it did it became a soothing balm to heal my soul after a hectic week. i don't think i have ever stumbled across this in my travels through the deep reaches of the wasteland, but if anyone knows of more albums from her, please let me know. this is incredibly great, & y'all should really enjoy this one.

Dave Scher and Jimi Hey, hail from Los Angeles, California, and have known each other since 1995, when a 16 year-old Hey would call Scher’s late-night radio program on KXLU requesting Six Finger Satellite on a repeated basis. This KXLU connection led them to playing music together in Bee Venom and later resulted in the formation of the more psychedelic country-minded Beachwood Sparks. In between leaving the group in ‘97 and rejoining it in 2002, Jimi also turned up in groups such as Strictly Ballroom, Tristeza, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theater, and The Rapture. The two have also moonlighted as members of Lilys. After completing the Beachwood Sparks’ tour of summer 2002, Dave and Jimi joined forces to create All Night Radio, a band in which they could throw off the musical shackles, so to speak. They have dubbed this new sound the “Spirit Stereo Frequency.”

Dave and Jimi spent the past year cultivating and developing their new sound in their living room studio, infusing their new songs with an ever-changing synthesis of traveling sounds from the Natural and Supernatural worlds. With the help of a deranged assortment of modern and primitive equipment, the boys tuned in to the Spirit Stereo Frequency…an Omnichronistic Music Source coming in non-stop, on bandwidth signals from the sun, in a collision of displaced sound styles from the present, past, and

this here record is a fucking beast of jazzy funk fusion shit with a little heaviness thrown in there for some serious head nodding while moving yr body. alphonse mouzon has played with some of my favorite cats including wayne shorter (!), mccoy tyner, freddie hubbard, & herbie fucking hancock. if that pedigree doesn't make you want to grab this, then i don't even know what to say.
